ABOUT THE PENINSULA SPA
Enter the realm of The Peninsula Spa which opened its doors for the first time in December 2006. Emerging from the lush compound of the Peninsula Bangkok Hotel, the three-storey colonial building is adjacent to the fitness centre and immediately emanates an air of tranquillity that entices guests. The exquisitely decorated spa spanning over 19,000 square feet is a peaceful sanctuary perfect for reinvigorating the exhausted body and mind, with personalised service to match exceptional treatments. The Peninsula Spa is also a destination where absolute professionalism is delivered. Its teams, from the management to the therapists, are trained by ESPA International, a leading spa consultancy firm from Britain. With each therapist having completed ESPA's intensive, 10-week training programme, they attest to the highest standard in terms of skill and quality, and are equipped with extensive knowledge in spa treatments and products.
From the reception area guests are escorted to the changing room before proceeding to the Tea Lounge where they can choose from a variety of aromatic Doi Tung herbal teas. A personal wellness consultation follows and an appropriate treatment room is designated. The spa comprises 14 rooms, plus two Private Spa Suites that feature a jacuzzi, double bath and rain shower, and another two River Private Spa Suites which also have a balcony overlooking the scenic Chao Phraya River. Designed by the famed Henry Leung from Chhada Siembieda Leung, each room boasts a striking interior. A rich and contemporary interpretation of traditional Thai elements, it fuses unique silk fabrics and handcrafted decorations with red bricks and aged wood while remaining superlatively multifunctional.
ESPA' s role goes beyond standardising the spa's service and developing the concept to creating new holistic treatments which adapt the best of Thai, Ayurvedic and European techniques. Drawing upon Eastern and Western relaxation philosophies, the result is Peninsula Ceremonies, a range of therapies exclusive to The Peninsula Spa. The signature offering here is Freedom of Life ? Oriental Life Dance, a one-hour-and-50-minute treatment which promises an optimum sense of well-being. It starts with a skin-softening body scrub and mind-clearing acupressure head massage, before extending to the body with powerful stretches and rotational movements to achieve polarity balancing. Hot stones and warm ESPA essential oils are also used for their soothing effects.
A more Ayurvedic-influenced therapy is Purva Karma Four Hand Synchronised Massage where two therapists work harmoniously together. Guests are first treated to a tri-doshic tea infusion and foot cleansing ceremony. This is followed by a massage combining multiple stretching and rolling, accompanied by deep, rhythmic strokes using special ESPA body oils enriched with Ayurvedic herbal concentrates: Bhringaraj for cleansing, Ashwaganda for regeneration and Grahmi for purifying the mind. Alternatively guests can try other programmes such as Aromatherapy, Balinese, Thai or Swedish Massages, among many others, which last either 50 or 80 minutes. If a specific concern needs to be addressed,
consult the therapists about speciality treatments such as pre-and postnatal therapies, or anti-cellulite hip and thigh massages.
Recommended for male guests is Thai Yoga Massage incorporating yogic stretching with gentle rocking and mindful breathing. Back, Face and Scalp Massage with Volcanic Stones relaxes tense spots with hot stones and aromatic oil, followed by a customised ESPA facial and acupressure scalp massage. Other treatments for men are available.
In addition, The Peninsula Spa presents a full menu of facial treatments. The highlight is Skin Brightener Age Defyer Facial, a programme which eliminates dullness by protecting the complexion against environmental and workplace stress. In less than two hours, the skin is rejuvenated as the face, neck and décolleté are cleansed, exfoliated and intensely hydrated with a mask, while eye bags are treated with the ESPA Intensive Eye treatment. A special facial therapy that traces the Shiatsu pressure points is combined with ESPA Skin Brightener, a skincare product infused with fruit extract blends and cell-boosting wild sea fennel. This potent combination tackles irregular pigmentation and reduces fine lines, leaving the face exceptionally luminous and radiant.
The Peninsula full-day and half-day Spa Journeys include access to fitness facilities, sauna, jaccuzzi and outdoor swimming pool. For the first 30 minutes guests are encouraged to spend time in the Tea Lounge and wind down in the relaxation areas. The package includes Fresh Ginger Foot Buff Treatment, plus four hours of body and facial treatments for the full-day package, and two hours of speciality therapies such as De-Stress, Detox Anti-Cellulite and Bride-To-Be for the half-day programme. Lunch is provided and is an opportunity to sample the signature Naturally Peninsula cuisine, a light and healthy menu concocted by the hotel's chef and served with a selection of equally delightful beverages.
In the pursuit of ensuring maximum comfort for discerning guests, ESPA and The Peninsula Spa share the same dedication in attending to the smallest details. All therapies are performed on the Clodagh Gemini fully automated massage tables created by renowned designer Clodagh in partnership with Oakworks. The treatment rooms are sound proof with the air-conditioning system isolated, while after a shower guests are kept warm with heated towel rails to maintain ideal temperature. Relaxation rooms come complete with custom-made oak and steel beds which feature actuators that allow adjustments to be made at the touch of a button. Each bed is also installed with a personal music system as well as the Aktiva gooseneck reading lamp. The Peninsula Spa offers a reclusive territory where inner peace is recovered and profound serenity prevails.
