The Spa
Putting back a little of what life takes out? is the maxim of The Spa at the Millennium Hilton. Here the pure fresh air and tranquil surroundings that enchant the senses also unbind the mind and allow the inner self to relax and rejuvenate. Situated in one of Bangkok?s newest five-star hotels, the Millennium Hilton, which has just added a playful yet lavish character to the City of Angels, the spa has proven to be far beyond an in-hotel recreation for stay-in guests only.
With a brilliant design by world-class professionals, the spa is undeniably beautiful. The sophisticatedly decorated main lobby of the 4,000-square-metre, multi-million-baht facility is wrapped in glass walls overlooking an outdoor garden one storey below. It is where a centuryold banyan tree calmly stands and that wonderfully lends the spa a spectacular impression while a view of the dynamic Chao Phraya River out front offers a vibrant yet relaxed feel, complementing the spa?s contemporary setting.
Upon arriving, guests are welcomed by a spa receptionist and greeted with lightly fragrant cold towels and a chilled herbal drink. Before going in for a treatment, there is a health assessment form to be filled out. After this has been reviewed by a trained receptionist, and with a spa manager also on hand to give advice and to respond to any concerns, guests then plan their programmes. Treatments here are presented in four categories representing the universe?s four elements: earth, air, water and fire. Because each element is believed to have distinctive healing powers, each category of therapies is designed to provide the benefits of the specific element.
The Earth menu features warm, soulful treatments using natural ingredients and ancient holistic wisdom to pamper the body and promote inner peace. Its one-hour Aromatic Moor Mud with Aquatherapy features warm moor mud rich in natural vitamins, minerals and enzymes generously applied to the entire body. As a result, sore muscles, aches and pains are alleviated as the body's circulation is stimulated and stress vanishes. It is ideal for those prone to chronic pain or fatigue, rheumatism or arthritis pain and post-sports injuries. For those who wish to have a luscious pampering, go for Thai Fruit Wrap. The 60-minute treatment uses a mixture of exotic fruit extracts to help draw out skin impurities while it deep cleanses and purifies the body complexion. Whilst wrapped in comforting towels, guests will feel a true sense of rejuvenation.
The Air category aims to energise the body and refresh the mind, so treatments include a glowing body scrub as well as a facial using caviar and pearl extract to increase skin oxygen and reduce lines and wrinkles. Pevonia Myoxy-Caviar and Pearl Facial, uses the professional spa product brand, Pevonia, from the US. The treatment allows one to take pleasure in a 90-minute facial pampering which cleanses and nourishes the skin. Equally result-orientated is Collagen Velvet Facial by Thalgo which provides intensive hydration for sun-damaged skin and diminishes fine lines and wrinkles. With pure native soluble collagen, protein-rich extracts and creams, this 75-minute treatment softens and smooths the skin and helps maintain moisture balance.
For guests with dry skin, it is recommended they choose from a The Spa wide variety of treatments in the Water menu, designed to moisturise and soothe the skin. Water Lily Soothing Wrap by Pevonia offers 45 minutes of skin cooling; the treatment relieves sun-damaged or sun-sensitive skin with this nourishing wrap. Cooling and desensitising water lily, green tea and chamomile ease the discomfort of over-exposed skin and alleviate the burning and stinging sensation. Another one worth trying is O2 Marine Facial by Thalgo. It is a purifying oxygenating treatment for sallow skins which is polluted by stress and a negative lifestyle. This booster with marine and plant proteins replenishes and nourishes, resulting in a natural, healthy glow. It?s the perfect facial for the city-dweller.
The last category, the Fire menu, is designed to eliminate toxins and alleviate the stresses of modern-day living through treatments like Hot Oil Massage, featuring a luxurious massage using warmed aromatic oil, and combining full palm techniques and gilding strokes over the body. The massage helps promote blood circulation and revives the body. The Coconut Body Polisher, on the other hand, is an ideal post sun treatment as coconut oil helps to maintain the colouring after a day in the sun and gives the skin a golden radiance.
In a category of its own is Equilibrium Therapy which is The Spa?s signature treatment. The 90-minute body programme is a combination of Body Exfoliation and Thai Palm Massage using a hot compress pack. It aims to help reduce muscle tiredness and enliven the body as a whole. In this steady, no-finger pressure treatment, natural honey and ground black sesame seeds are used for the body scrub while warm wild mint oil which helps to smoothen the skin is used for the compress massage.
Other than the a la carte programmes, The Spa also has a good selection of packages ranging from two to six hours. Personal packages can also be tailored upon request to cater to individual requirements.
For those who are not a fan of thematic or product-orientated spas with an all-you-can-imagine range of wild ingredients, they will be gratified here. At the end of the day, nothing is more important than the service and skill of the trained therapists and their masterly hands. And it is apparent that The Spa at Millennium Hilton does a great job in seamlessly combining Thai graciousness with Western-style professionalism.
